A funny thing has happened to the Rolex Daytona reference 116508—the one with the gold case and a They’re-After-Me-Lucky-Charms green dial. Well, at first, nothing at all happened. The watch debuted at Baselworld in 2016, and unlike many Daytona models, or Rolex watches in general, there was not a group of men with fat savings accounts banging down their boutique’s door to get one. That all changed earlier this year, when John Mayer showed this piece off in a Hodinkee video. “That was all it took,” Paul Altieri, CEO of pre-owned Rolex dealership Bob’s Watches, told the New York Times. The watch suddenly attracted all sorts of customers—including, it appears, Jonah Hill!
